October often gets called Breast Cancer Awareness Month. But let’s be honest, most of us are already aware. What we rarely hear about in mainstream medicine is what actually prevents breast cancer, supports long-term breast health, and gives women real options for navigating menopause safely and confidently.
I prefer to think of this as Breast Health Month. Because while early detection is important, prevention is even better.
Research shows that up to 75% of breast cancers are non-genetic. DNA damage, estrogen dominance, stress, and environmental toxins are major contributors. These are not things we need to wait to measure with a mammogram. We can identify and address them now.
This is where functional medicine shines. By looking deeper at how your body produces, metabolizes, and detoxifies hormones, we get answers that empower you to take action before symptoms or disease ever show up.
The DUTCH test (Dried Urine Test for Comprehensive Hormones) is one of my favorite tools. Unlike standard hormone testing, it not only shows hormone levels but also how your body is metabolizing estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, and cortisol.
Why is that important? Because some estrogen pathways are protective, while others increase risk. The DUTCH test reveals which pathways your body is favoring. With that knowledge, we can:
Decide if bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is safe and beneficial for you
Fine-tune lifestyle and supplement support to shift hormones down the healthiest pathways
Reduce inflammation and oxidative stress that drive DNA damage
Support natural detoxification and mineral balance for long-term prevention
This means you do not have to fear hormones or avoid HRT altogether. Instead, you can use them strategically with a clear, data-driven plan that minimizes risk.
Although menopause often brings these concerns front and center, this conversation is not just for midlife. Teenagers and young women benefit from supporting healthy hormone balance early on. Laying that foundation builds resilience that lasts a lifetime. By the time we reach perimenopause or menopause, prevention is no longer a luxury, it is the key to thriving instead of struggling through a neglected health crisis.
I was inspired recently by the work of thought leaders like Megan Bendinelli, NP, and Dr. Tanya Goodrich, PT, DPT, who emphasize open dialogue about prevention and empowerment. It reaffirms my commitment to making functional medicine tools like the DUTCH test accessible to women and families who are tired of guessing and ready for clarity.
If you have been wondering whether your symptoms or even your risks are tied to hidden hormone imbalances, the DUTCH test can give you real answers and a personalized roadmap. Prevention starts here.
